Module summary

In this module students will develop advanced Spanish language skills and work to becoming autonomous users of the target language. (CEFR Level B2/C1 level in the first semester and C1/C2 in the second).  Students will learn how to use Spanish in a wide range of contexts, with appropriate register. The course further extends the accurate use of grammatical structures and vocabulary. It also focuses on intercultural communication skills and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries.
The course is structured around class time, autonomous learning and guided WebLearn materials.

Prior learning requirements

Completion of OSL076 or B2 competence in Spanish

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

•  To increase students’ linguistic competence in Spanish in all skills towards an advanced/Proficient level  (C1/C2) of the Common European Framework of Reference);
• To further develop appropriate language learning strategies to encourage effective autonomous learning
• To focus on the cultures of Spanish speaking countries
• To enhance student employability and transferable skills

Syllabus

• Development of a range of listening skills
• Production of a range of texts in different registers
• Development of accurate and coherent oral skills
• Extension of range of lexis
• Revision and extension of accurate use of grammar structures
• Development of oral fluency

Learning and teaching

Learning and teaching strategies will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Learners will actively participate in individual and group activities in class and autonomously, using online resources and tools available on Weblearn, as well as paper based materials. They will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning.

 

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  By the end of the module students should be able to:

write with clarity and precision,  with appropriate register on a variety of topics
write with only minor errors in a variety of different contexts and genres

2.
Present an agreed and researched topic for a particular audience and purpose
Demonstrate fluency and accuracy in the target language with a wide range of vocabulary
Use a wide range of cohesive devices to produce clear, coherent discourse
give a fluent presentation on a researched topic with a wide range of lexis and accurate use of grammar
use a wide range of cohesive devices to speak clearly and coherently

Assessment strategy

Learning outcomes 1 and 2 will be assessed by coursework and an oral test.
