Module summary

This module introduces students to good practice in the management of interactive projects and explores issues in team management, client handling, outsourcing and asset management, copyright and legal issues, the planning and production life-cycle, budgets and marketing.

To enable students to effectively manage all the stages in the production of new media projects

To research, produce and apply management solutions in relation to new media project handling

Syllabus

This module introduces students to good practice in the management of interactive projects and explores issues in team management, client handling, outsourcing and asset management, copyright and legal issues, the planning and production life-cycle, budgets and marketing. Students will be encouraged to research management theory and produce management solutions for new media production problems.  Students will explore and evaluate current trends in new media management, evaluate project planning tools and address issues in international and virtual team management.
An indicative programme of study covers the following

  • The role of the project manager, senior project manager and account handler in new media productions
  • Efficient management of the digital media production life-cycle
  • Project management models and theories
  • Evaluation of project management tools and software
  • Team management  - Outsourcing and Freelance commissioning
  • International perspective: localisation and translation issues
  • Managing international and virtual teams
  • Managing technical and creative teams
  • Client Management and Account Handling techniques
  • Crisis Management
  • Legal and contractual issues

Learning and teaching

Teaching methods include lectures and on-line interactive learning material, tutorials, seminar discussions and computer lab sessions. Students will be expected to attend lectures and take part into on-line activities as well as comment on their readings.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module post-graduate students will be able to:

LO1 Analyse, evaluate and apply project management theories, models and strategies
LO2 Produce a project management plan for a new media production
LO3 Critically analyse solutions for new media project management problems

Assessment strategy

A) A Production Plan for a new media project based on a brief set by the tutor. (weighting 60%). Due in week 14. [LO1, LO2]. This part of the assessment is designed to test students' expertise in organising and producing an effective project management plan for a new media production.

B) A 2,500 word Report analysing the main issues and suggesting the solutions to problems in a specific new media project management scenario set by the tutor. (weighting 40%). Due in week 8. [LO1, LO3]. This part of the assessment is designed to test students' analytical skills and problem solving abilities.
