Module summary
This module allows students to show their analytical skills as well as their practical translating competence by completing an extended translation and writing a commentary on it. They will be expected to know how to find a text of appropriate level of specialisation and length for the purposes of translation into the relevant target language. Students are shown how and where to search for appropriate source texts in terms of difficulty, length and degree of specialisation, how to work independently on their chosen text, the production of a commentary as well as their translation, under the guidance of their language-specific supervisor. Students are expected to use feedback they receive to improve and develop their project. Students will at all times be expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently, seek advice from appropriate sources (supervisor, peers, colleagues, etc) and make constructive use of feedback. They are also expected to translate the text to a professional standard of accuracy, identify and make use of appropriate research, apply searching and documentation strategies and use appropriate translation tools. Students will analyse the text in the light of the knowledge they have accumulated in previous years while studying other modules such as TR5052 and TR5053 and write a commentary that goes beyond mere descriptiveness, showing their analytical and strategic competence at pre-translation stage. Students are finally expected to give due importance to post-translation analysis.

Syllabus
This module comprises a combination of generic sessions and individual language-specific supervisions. Individual supervisions can take place online (via email or Skype) or face-to-face.
There will be 16 contact hours in total:
• 10 hours generic sessions (Five 2 hour-long taught sessions)
• 6 hours individual supervisions
Self-study learning hours include finding, analyzing and translating a 2500 word source text, conducting relevant subject-specific research, and interacting with peers on WebLearn discussion forum.
After each language specific session, students are expected to reflect on the feedback received, recording their progress in a reflective report (using the template provided on WebLearn). The feedback received will allow them to improve not only their translation but also their source text analysis including the translation procedures they chose to solve particular translation problems.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
Students will be reminded that this is their own project so the ultimate responsibility for its final form lies with them. To achieve their full potential, students will be allocated a language-specific tutor who will work closely (along with the module leader) to provide advice and support on how best to approach their project and work towards improving both their translation and commentary.
Students will be reminded that they need to plan the research and writing-up of their project very carefully and well in advance, using information and guidance gained during their teaching sessions, individual supervision sessions and via WebLearn interactions with their peers.
One of the aims of the module is to put students in circumstances that require independent work, so they need to be very well organised and they must not leave tasks till the last moment.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Identify, select and use a source text meeting required criteria in terms of length, difficulty and level of specialisation.
2. Provide examples illustrating their independent work towards a specific translation-related goal.
3. Use various sources to improve the quality of their translation complying with professional standards.
4. Evaluate and discuss the overall translation process in the form of a written commentary.
5. Act inclusively, collaboratively and in a socially responsible manner when interacting with peers on WebLearn’s discussion board.
Assessment strategy
Students are expected to write up a project of a total of 5000 words comprising various elements such as a commentary (2500 words) on the basis of a strategic analysis of a source text of their choice (also including the analysis of 6 genuine translation problems) and the translation of that source text (approximately 2500 words in length).
Students will have ample opportunities of engaging with formative activities to allow them to boost their confidence in readiness for writing their translation project.
