TITLE: Principles of Digital Media
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: This module will provide students with a detailed understanding of the
contexts and practices of multimedia; introduce them to the production of a multimedia project;
and develop awareness of the communicative possibilities of multimedia.

ASSESSMENT: Interactive image series(50%)+2,000 word essay (50%)

Module aims

? To provide students with a detailed understanding of the contexts and practices of multimedia;
? To introduce them to the production of a multimedia project;
? To develop awareness of the communicative possibilities of multimedia.

Syllabus

This module will analyse and address the following issues:
- Introduction to digital media
- History and conceptual development of digital media
- Information society
- New media politics and surveillance
- Digital cultures, digital folklore
- Digital aesthetics, database, glitch, image
- Open source, intellectual property, control and freedom
- Self-organization and participation, social web
- Interactive design, software studies
- Cybernetics, human computer Interaction and emotion
- The e-economy, precarious and free labour

Learning and teaching

Teaching methods include lectures and on-line interactive learning material, tutorials, seminar discussions and computer lab sessions. Students will be expected to attend lectures and take part into on-line activities as well as comment on their readings.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module post-graduate students will be able to:

? LO1 Assess and select the appropriate tools to produce a multimedia project;
? LO2 Create a small multimedia project;
? LO3 Critically analyse the current issues and future developments in multimedia and electronic publishing

Assessment strategy

a) An interactive image series presented on CDROM
(Weighting 50%)
b) A 2,000 word essay critically assessing the context of multimedia developments (50%).
