Module summary
This module helps the student to develop theoretical and practical knowledge of network operating systems, This is achieved by exposing the student to some of the most commonly used network operating systems. The student will reinforce their theoretical knowledge in practical sessions where they will install configure , manage and trouble-shoot network operating systems.
Module aims
The aim of this module is:
1. To understand the importance of Network operating systems(NOS)
2. To explain the operation of Network operating systems , and their benefits
3. To describe hardware requirements for the effective operation of NOS
4. To compare some of the most commonly available NOS, and their abilities and limitations
5. To understand the concept of virtualisation and its application in modern server environments
6. To understand server documentation, security and trouble shooting

Learning and teaching
The teaching and learning strategy for this module is a combination of lectures and intensive laboratory work Group or team work is encouraged and reinforced at the laboratory sessions . It is however the individual student effort that is assessed.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
LO1. Understand how the modern Network operating systems work, and the interrelation between hardware and software;
LO2. Explain the function and structure of modern Network operating systems;
LO3. Identify the compare the most widely used Network operating systems;
LO4. Use preventive maintenance to solve security upgrading issues;
LO5. Implement hardware and software troubleshooting techniques.
Assessment strategy
The syllabus will be tested through by a variety of instruments. A multiple choice test in week 7 will provide feedback to both the tutor and students on their progress. The unit is based heavily on practical application of knowledge, a practical exam based on the workshops is held in week 12 (Covering LO1, 2, 3 and 4). Students are expected to keep a Logbook that will be assessed as part of the practical. The module has a final unseen examination carrying 50% ( covering LO1 to 5).
