Module summary

This module provides students with the experience of planning and bringing to fruition a piece of research work on the translators’ professional environment.
The module offers a range of workshops and professional talks to enhance students’ industry knowledge and further develop their research skills. The research will include, for example, the client-translator relationship, areas of specialisation, associations supporting translators in source and target language as well as continuous professional development and working for agencies.  It will support future employability and reflective practice, as students will have the opportunity to assimilate the knowledge they gained in the work placement through research and independent study. For this, the assessment will take the form of a reflective account where students will have the opportunity to demonstrate that they have gained further industry knowledge.

Syllabus

The syllabus will focus on preparing students for the module requirements.

Students will attend workshops where the structure of the assignment will be explained. Research guidelines and sources will be provided. In additon, students will attend talks and webinars given by speakers from professional associations, translation service providers and alumni. These events will be an opportunity to network and connect with potential employers and alumni.

Students will be asked to reflect on these talks and the translator’s professional environment. They are expected to carry out independent research about the sector and write a good quality and well structured reflective assignnmet.

Learning Outcomes LO1 - LO4

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Students will attend workshops and talks given by professionals and various stakeholders.
Additionally, they wil engage in self-directed study and learning with appropriate time management. They will work independently to reinforce and consolidate the skills gained during the placement whilst researching the translator’s professional environment in an in-depth manner.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

 

1. Demonstrate that they can extract and synthesise key information about the role of associations and regulatory bodies.

2. Identify the main characteristics of the client-translator relationship and their contractual duties and responsibilities.

3. Apply research techniques and methods and critically analyse the sources available to them before drawing conclusions.

4. Demonstrate personal confidence and understanding of requirements needed in the translation environment.

Assessment strategy

Students will write a reflective analysis of 2000 words based on their summaries of the talks and their own research on the role of associations and regulatory bodies, the characteristics of the client-translator relationship and their contractual duties and responsibilities, and the range of tools and resources available for a chosen field of specialisation.
