Module summary

This module will introduce students to a range of Specific Learning Differences (also known as Specific Learning Difficulties, Developmental Disorders, Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Neurodiversity).  Specific Learning Differences (SLDs) is an umbrella term that covers a range of conditions, including:
• Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
• Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
• Dyslexia
The module focuses on how these learning differences are diagnosed and how they impact cognition, behaviour and education.  You will learn some key theories and research evidence that underly the diagnosis, treatments and interventions of Specific Learning Differences.
We will consider the lived experience of individuals with SLDs and their families and teachers, recognising that an individual’s strengths and difficulties will present differently and may change depending on the task or the environment.

Syllabus

A range of Specific Learning Differences will be covered including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Dyslexia

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Students will gain core knowledge and understanding of the topics through lectures. A deeper understanding, evaluation and skill development will be promoted through seminars and directed study of reading material and online resources.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Explain the key characteristics and diagnosis of specific learning differences (SLDs) and identify some theories underpinning our understanding of SLDs
2. Evaluate theories and/or interventions in light of research evidence, and from an inclusive perspective
3. Translate research into practice for individuals with SLDs, and their families

Assessment strategy

Summative assessment  is made up of  two separate pieces of coursework that will, together, assess all of the learning outcomes.  The assessments will offer students choice so that they can personalise their assignment and explore the elements of the module that most interest them.
