Module summary
The module requires the students to undertake a detailed, critical investigation into a contentious legal topic relating to Business Law; the investigation is structured, so that students are required to formulate a research proposal at the outset; engage with regular supervision throughout the process; and produce at the end a reflective statement describing and evaluating the experience of their research and of their undergraduate studies generally
Module aims
To enable students to formulate a Research Proposal identifying an appropriate Business law topic and considering appropriate research techniques
To enable students to show an ability to undertake sustained investigation of a legal topic relating to Business Law
To encourage students to plan and organise a substantial piece of work and develop their work-organisation skills
To enable students to show an ability to produce work at a high level of presentation

Learning and teaching
The module will be unique in that Learning will be almost entirely student-driven. Though some guidance will be given as to possible areas of research and recommended research trails, the area of law to be uncovered and the organisation of material required for its communication will be almost entirely the responsibility of the student. A timetable and research strategy will be devised by agreement between student and supervisor. Progress will be monitored through the supervision process.
Materials on-line will guide the students in relation to research methods and contain sign-posts towards literature (paper and electronic) relevant to their particular topic
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will be able to
Identify an appropriate area for research
Identify appropriate research techniques for the retrieval of legal and non-legal materials
Engage in legal research at a graduate level of depth and breadth
Communicate the state of the law and the impact or potential impact of legal developments from a social or moral perspective
Synthesise legal rules and their human or social context
Describe and reflect on the value of their research and its contribution to their personal development
