Module summary

The module aims to:

  1. Introduce students to the key processes for the management of community and youth organisations.
  2. Provide opportunity for students to recognise professional and ethical aspects of leadership and management, and issues of equality, diversity and social justice in these fields
  3. Develop students' understanding and awareness of the issues of managing in community organisations by means of case-study analysis.
  4. Identify key benefits of partnership and collaborative working
  5. Encourage students to reflect on their capabilities as a manager and leader.

The module commences with an introduction to theories of leadership and management, integrating theory with practice and case studies. This will be based on a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops.

 

Students reflect on leadership through group work, and then on their engagement with real-world organisations.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

 

  1. identify a range of management processes, linking these to practice (LO1)
  2. appraise the range of skills required of leaders and managers in various aspects of management and particularly in community organisations (LO2)
  3. analyse some of the professional, ethical and equality issues related to the management of community and other organisations (LO3)
  4. evaluate their own strengths in the context of management and leadership (LO4)

Assessment strategy

The assessment is based on a 2500-word workbook. The workbook reflects on structured group work and links practice to theory (100% of mark)

 

This module offers opportunities for formative assessment, and draft work is considered and commented on. Comments on draft work are provided a week before the final hand in date, so that students have opportunities to amend their work. It is also provided through group and individual discussion of progress in the workbook
