Module summary

Students will be supervised to produce a piece of empirical research that addresses an issue relevant to their professional environment.  This is an independent study module, with students receiving monthly supervision from 2 supervisors.

This module involves the submission of a 50,000-word research thesis over a minimum of a 2-year period.


This is a core module for the Dprof Crime, Policy and Security.

Prior learning requirements

Completion of SS7008, SS7009, SS7010, SS7011, SS7012, SS7013, SS7W02 and successful passing of internal upgrade viva

Syllabus

This module is based on the research student receiving regular
supervision by their designated supervisors to complete a 50,000-word thesis. There will be preparatory activities related to the thesis built into all the prerequisite modules for the course. (1-3)

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

This module is primarily based on independent study by the student and regular supervision of the research student offered by their supervisors. The student will be provided with periodic reviews of their data collection, analysis and writing progress. Formal university research meetings will confirm student progress at regular points during the process.

  1. To identify and refine a research question for suitable for enquiry at Dprof level
  2. Carry out academic research to a Dprof level
  3. Produce and successful defend at a viva voce an academic thesis at the level of Dprof

Assessment strategy

This module will be assessed through the production of a 50,000-word thesis on a topic agreed between the student and supervisor, which will be peer reviewed through a viva voca. Progress is reviewed every six months through the RD2 process, with final submission after two years of study
