Module summary

This module is designed to provide you with an up-to-date understanding of the range of analytical techniques in use in the pharmaceutical industry and the QA processes that they underpin. By undertaking this module you will:

  1. gain a more in depth understanding of the principles of the major analytical techniques.
  2. be able to evaluate and assess the appropriateness of analytical methods for specific applications.
  3. gain an understanding of the role of quality assurance procedures in pharmaceutical analysis.

Syllabus

Survey of techniques for the analysis of pharmaceutical agents, their metabolites and contaminants, to include:
Spectroscopic methods (LO 1-4)
Mass spectrometric methods (LO 1-4)
Electrochemical methods (LO 1-4)
Chromatographic methods (LO 1-4)
Immunoassay techniques (LO 1-4)
Validation of analytical methods (LO 2-4)
Sample preparation in pharmaceutical analysis (LO 1-4)

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Students will be provided with the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the subject material through teacher-led activities in the form of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Students’ ability to make critical evaluations will be developed through the analysis of source material and the examination of problem-based material supported by tutorial discussion. Students’ ability to obtain and critically appraise data, and solve related problems will be developed to reflect on taught material in order to demonstrate their understanding of the principles underpinning the module.

PDP: On completion of this module students’ will provide an evaluation of how the module allowed them to develop skills such as information technology, organisational skills, team building, leadership, communication, time management, and working under pressure.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the instrumentation required for modern instrumental techniques.
  2. Articulate knowledge and understanding of current analytical methods.
  3. Provide a critical evaluation of methods available for detecting and/or quantifying a range of analytes.
  4. Use primary sources to design analytical protocols.

Assessment strategy

The module will be summatively assessed by means of a practical portfolio (50% of the overall mark) and an unseen examination (50% of the overall mark). To pass the module students need to achieve an overall minimum aggregate mark of 50%.

Students will receive oral formative feedback during and following participation in tutorials and practical sessions, and will also be given the opportunity to receive critiques of drafts of the practical portfolio component of the module. Written summative feedback is provided on both assessment items of the module.
