Module summary
The module is highly practical and is designed to prepare students for real world networks. This will be achieved by teaching them to troubleshoot communication on large-scale data networks using Cisco equipment, and extend their research skills. The student will cover network maintenance tools, diagnostic commands, switch and VLAN troubleshooting, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP troubleshooting, IPv4 and IPV6 addressing and routing issues, troubleshooting of wireless and unified communications, and the troubleshooting of security. A good trouble-shooter can save time and mitigate costs incurred by downtime.
Module aims
- Define and explain the need for Network Management.
- To develop an in-depth understanding of different troubleshooting methodologies.
- To give student practical exposure to Network Management and troubleshooting tools

Establishing network performance baseline.
OSI model and its use in network troubleshooting.
Communicating with the network (Telnet, SSH, HTTP/S).

Learning and teaching
A problem / laboratory based learning approach will be adopted to satisfy the aims and objectives and hence the learning outcomes. Formal lectures will be further strengthened via hands-on individual case studies. First part of the module concentrates on troubleshooting methods and techniques. Students are introduced to detection and remediation of faults that can occur on OSI Layers 1 to 4. Second part deals with Network Management protocols and FCAPS model.
Learning outcomes
On successfully completing the work covered in this module, the student should be able to:
LO1. Critically analyse, identify and solve common network problems at OSI layers 1, 2, 3 and 7.
LO2. Appraise and apply various techniques used for troubleshooting.
LO3. Evaluate and justify the application of appropriate tools for Network Management.
LO4. Demonstrate in-depth understanding and application of Network Management Protocols.
Assessment strategy
In-class Progress Tests and Case Study plus Practical Examination based on the laboratory work.
Progress test assess theoretical knowledge of Network Troubleshooting (LO 1&2), Practical – hands-on troubleshooting skills (LO 1&2) and Case Study (1200 Words) involves a topic on Network Management (LO 3&4).
