Module summary

This module aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the principles of health promotion, public health and wellbeing within the context of nursing practice. Students will learn the principles of health promotion and wellbeing, and how to prevent ill-health by demonstrating the use of contemporary approaches to behaviour change that enable people to use their strengths.

The module will also provide an understanding the factors that impact upon health and wellbeing including inequality, environment, long term health conditions, culture and behaviour.

Students will assess the role of the nurse in promoting health and wellbeing considering the roles and responsibilities of general and more specialist nurses.

Syllabus

The interaction of health and other environmental factors (diversity, inequalities, socio-economic, genetic and political influences) on health and disease,
Identifying behaviours and lifestyle factors which impact health and wellbeing,
Principles of public health policy,
Factors influencing public health policy and health policy overall including ethical and political concerns,
Use of available data sources in the development and evaluation of health promotion and public health including epidemiological data, demography and results of population surveys,

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Acquisition of knowledge of the subject matter of this module will be promoted through lecturer-led lectures (24 hours) and tutorial workshops (14 hours); and through the guided use of web-based learning (12 hours) and other student-centred learning resources (90 hours). Small group work in preparation for assessment (10 hours) will be used to consolidate the student with guidance for directed activities.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Recognise and investigate the direct and wider determinants of health, and inequalities in health in local communities and the wider population of London.
2. Reflect upon the core roles of the nurse in promoting health and wellbeing across the lifespan, and co-morbidities.
3. Identify and apply key concepts and theories in relation to health promotion and wellbeing in key areas of public health policy at personal, group, community, and population levels.
4. Assess and make recommendations for health promoting activities for identified groups and consider how these might be evaluated.

Assessment strategy

In order to pass the module students will be required to gain a mark of 40% or a pass in each summative assessment component. The summative assessment of this module comprises two elements: development of a health promotion video and supporting narrative.

1.  Poster or video - design and create either an A3 poster (1500 maximum word limit), or short health promotion/wellbeing video suitable for social media (5 minutes maximum length) (50%).

2. Narrative Report of 2000 words providing the rationale for the chosen health promotion or wellbeing issue identified in assessment 1. This should include a brief exploration of relevance to the target audience, and how it relates to current UK or Worldwide health promotion policy (50%).
