Module summary

Physiotherapy Theory and Practice 3 module extends students’ knowledge and practice skills in the second-year by building on the foundation developed in the first year’s Physiotherapy Theory and Practice modules 1 & 2. It will run alongside Applied Science 3 (PT5050) and Physiotherapy Theory and Practice 4: Health promotions and wellbeing (PT5052) modules.

In this module, students will extend their capabilities for applying clinical science to the assessment, treatment, exercise prescription & self-management of contemporary musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological problems encountered in clinical practice across the lifespan.

As a skills module, students will utilise a case-based approach to develop sound evidence-based clinical reasoning and hands-on skills for the management of patients with common and diverse clinical problems. In addition, the module will provide an opportunity to relate the management of patients’ presentations with referral processes and specialist pathways.

Furthermore, the module will facilitate and develop skills to evaluate effective physiotherapy when working in clinical practice.

Syllabus

Knowledge

Application of contextual frameworks: e.g. biopsychosocial, ICF, NHS and adult social care frameworks, primary and secondary care pathway, emergency care and fracture clinic, building and developing the knowledge from Year 1 modules.

Clinical reasoning and management of cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal & neurological conditions, including the understanding and application of appropriate evidence, through the exploration of case studies.

Cardiorespiratory focus within this module: bronchiectasis, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, surgical conditions, introduction to multi-morbidity – heart failure

Musculoskeletal focus within this module: spinal management including cervical, thoracic & lumbar spine, sacroiliac joints and chronic pain management.

Neurological focus within this module: Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), Motor Neurone Disease (MND), Cerebellar ataxia, Hyperkinetic disorders,  Functional Neurologic Disorder (FND), stroke (CVA)

Multi-disciplinary management of common conditions focusing on care pathways (e.g., at-home and community outreach for COPD), and the basis of specific physiotherapeutic interventions and rehabilitation programmes e.g., task specific training, mirror therapy, exercise therapy Parkinson’s, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, exercise prescription for long term conditions, pain management, community physiotherapy etc.

Skills

Manual therapy for spinal rehabilitation

Exercise prescription for spinal pain

Comprehensive neurological assessment  for multiple sclerosis, Parkinson Disease, functional neurological disorder, cerebellar ataxia,

Motor rehabilitation – task specific training for stroke, neurological disorders such as PD, MS, FND, cerebellar ataxia

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Comprehensive Cardiorespiratory assessment of chest

Advanced interpretation of chest X-Rays

Spinal red flags and functional spinal assessment,

Acute post-surgical respiratory assessment

Interpreting electrophysiological investigation (EMG, NCS)

Manual therapy (massage, soft tissue techniques, mobilisation techniques)

Acute post-surgical respiratory assessment

Postoperative physiotherapy (abdominal surgery) wound support,

Attitudes

Empathy, cultural competence, problem-solving for clinical reasoning

Biopsychosocial approach (problem identification, plan, review)

Person focused care, cultural and population awareness

Societal and global health awareness

Health promotion

Responding to different groups and individuals appropriately

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The teaching methods will include didactic teaching, guided self-study, blended learning, small group case study exploration, practical skills development sessions, case-based teaching.

Practical teaching will be a significant part of this module and students will be able to work in groups and receive feedback from practical tutors to support skills development.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this module, students should:

Apply sound knowledge and understanding of human functioning to formulate physiotherapy assessment, problem list, person-centred treatment goals for individuals with conditions affecting cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal and neurological systems as part of a problem-solving approach.

Formulate specific evidence-based treatment plans within a multi-disciplinary approach to care including patient education and self-management for patient with problems requiring clinical rehabilitation.

Deliver safe and effective, evidence-based physiotherapeutic interventions within own limits of practice as part of multi-disciplinary management of individuals requiring clinical rehabilitation in hospital wards, outpatient clinics, community and home settings.

Evaluate safe and effective, evidence-based physiotherapeutic treatment and management for individuals with varied problems using standard outcome measures to demonstrate the effectiveness of their interventions.

Demonstrate the ability to work safely and effectively within own scope of practice in collaboration with others and refer appropriately when necessary.

Analyse and justify the role for physiotherapy within a multidisciplinary approach to promote recovery, rehabilitation and reablement services for individuals with cardiorespiratory, musculoskeletal, neurological conditions.
