Module summary

This module aims to:

Develop students personal and professional development skills and competences for effective interpersonal and professional relationships.

Develop students’ knowledge and skills for effective interpersonal and professional communication

Enable students to develop self-awareness and emotional intelligence for effective practice with service users and carers

Develop the knowledge and skills for effective reflective practitioners

Develop students’ ability to use reflective techniques in relation to work with individuals and groups in the health and social care settings

Syllabus

The module programme is structured to tackle each of the learning outcomes in turn.

The relationship between self-awareness and emotional intelligence and effective interpersonal and professional communication.LO1

The role and importance of values within health and social care - anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice, the nature and scope of knowledge and skills necessary for effective practice LO2

An introduction to the reflective skills for effective practice in health and social care LO3

An introduction to the nature and importance of professional boundaries in health and social care.LO4

The nature of relationships between health and social care practitioners and service users and carers; the continuum between paternalism and partnership, user and carer led services LO5

Development planning and action plans to enable personal and professional goal setting and review LO6

 

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

A range of teaching methods will be used throughout this module: lectures, presentations, seminars, skills development workshops and discussions, both face to face and online. These sessions will provide background coverage on topics under discussion and interactive learning. Students will be required to read set texts and articles and to discuss these in classes and seminars. Additional resources will be available online via WebLearn. Module staff will be available to provide face-to-face, telephone, and email support to students during and outside timetabled sessions.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of self and emotional intelligence for effective interpersonal and professional communication.
2. Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of health and social care work values, anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice, knowledge and skills for effective practice
3. Demonstrate an understanding and an awareness of the skills of effective reflective practitioner in health and social care
4. Develop an understanding of professional boundaries in health and social care.
5. Demonstrate an ability to learn from service users and carers
6. Construct personal development targets and action plans to enable progress review.

Assessment strategy

The assessment is designed to test the student's ability to reflect on their personal and professional development. To assess achievement against the module aims and learning outcomes, students will be expected to submit a reflective account of their personal and professional development over the course of the module and an action plan addressing their development needs for year two.
