Module summary
This module enables students to re-visits their teaching and learning on their course. It requires students to complete a substantive student led project. This is a core module for Social Work students and Youth students. Students will have scope to develop their critical analytical skills, engage with the research process and undertake a substantive exploration of a relevant subject and with a view to consolidating transferable skills for future employment.
Syllabus
• The role of research within social work practice, evidence-based practice, and developing ‘research mindedness’
• Understanding research and evaluation processes
• Evaluation of social research
• Skills for retrieving information from electronic and other academic sources and appraising sources
• Effective research design: constructing literature reviews
• Practical issues of undertaking research
• Organising data and analysis, and presentation of research findings
• Ethical research , Anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive research approaches
• Dealing with limitations, biases, reflection in research
• The role of the supervisor
Learning Outcomes 1 - 4
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
Teaching is via ten workshops reflecting the indicative syllabus. Research time and group supervision; six individual supervision sessions.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Appraise the research process and the contribution of research and evaluation informing social work practice
2. Formulate a project proposal and design a study where the use of methodology and methods selected are identified
3. Search and appraise the academic literature, organising data and evidence
4. Produce a fluent and accurately written project for the social work practice context, applying theories, constructing organised lines of argument leading to conclusions and reflecting critically on the process of learning
Assessment strategy
Using secondary research, the assessment will enable students to independently research a topic of relevant professional interest and write a 6000 word dissertation. The topic and title will be chosen by the student and agreed by the Dissertation Supervisor and/or Module Lead.
Assessment:
Weighting 100%
A 6000 word dissertation of a topic relevant to the student’s professional area. Topic/Title to be identified and agreed by the student and agreed by the dissertation supervisor.
