Module summary

This module reviews the aetiology, pathophysiology and clinical investigation of selected systems diseases that make a significant contribution to morbidity and mortality within healthcare. It gives an evaluative systems approach to disease (including cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, immune disorders and cancer) with reference to underlying molecular and cellular perturbations.
The module aims to provide, through in depth study, knowledge and understanding of pathology, characterise molecular and cellular factors underpinning the pathogenesis of selected human diseases and an appreciation of the genetic basis of inherited diseases using up-to-date primary sources and discusses the latest technological innovations.
It will also allow students to critically research and evaluate selected topics within the subject area, and communicate the results in a cogent and balanced manner, reinforce analytical, evaluative and communication skills.

Syllabus

Mechanisms of disease processes and their associated molecular and cellular lesions including:

the aetiology, and pathology of microbial and viral disease and a review of emerging infections
the aetiology and pathology of the liver, kidney and gastrointestinal disease and the development of cardiovascular and a review of autoimmune disorders
a review of selected endocrine disorders including diabetes, discussing causes, classification and consequences
the genetic–epigenetic interface in tumour biology including the pathology of grading as well as metastasis and  biochemical markers of disease spread.
cellular and tissue pathology the use of a range of diagnostic techniques in the investigation of disease at a molecular and cellular level.

LO 1-3

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Students knowledge and understanding of Integrated Pathology will be developed through a programme of lectures (constituting some 22 hours of study), tutorial and supporting practical exercises (18 hours), including some problem-based approaches.
PDP: on completion of this module students provide an evaluation of how the module allowed them to develop skills such as information technology, organisational skills, team building, communication, time management, and working under pressure.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will:

1.  Demonstrate a systematic understanding and knowledge of the aetiology, pathophysiology, clinical investigation of selected system pathologies.
2.  Demonstrate a thorough understanding of how recent research has led to a greater understanding of pathological mechanisms, improved diagnosis or disease monitoring.
3.  Critically evaluate pathological issues using a wide range of learning resources, interpret and evaluate information, and communicate conclusions effectively, both in an ethical and scientific context.

Assessment strategy

The module will be summatively assessed by an completion of a 2000 word report (50%, covering learning outcomes 1,2,3) and by a presentation of a critical review of a relevant scientific paper (50%, covering learning outcomes 1,2,3)
Criteria for assessment will include an understanding of the subject matter; an ability, both orally and written, to explain, describe and discuss the work; completeness and conciseness of written reports and essays with emphasis upon critical ability and scientific rigour.
To pass the module students need to achieve a minimum aggregate mark of 50%.
