Module summary

This module provides you with a rigorous framework of knowledge and understanding of the mechanisms of people management. The module aligns with a number of the core knowledge membership standards and core behavioural membership standards set out in the Professional Map of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD). However, the module content will be valuable whatever your chosen career specialism.

The module will familiarise you with major contemporary research evidence on leadership and management, identifying effective approaches to Human Resource Management and Human Resource Development practice. Research focusing on the links between people management practices and positive organisational outcomes will be covered, including contemporary and emerging developments in practice.

The module encourages and enables you to develop a strong sense of awareness of your own strengths and weaknesses as a leader, manager and colleague.

During the module, you will build a portfolio of valuable skills required for effectiveness in leadership and in people management. These include leading dynamic teams, decision-making skills, interpersonal skills and others associated with developing personal effectiveness and credibility at work.

Finally, the module includes some key post-graduate level study-skills, which will help you to engage fully with your academic studies and apply your academic learning to your professional practice. The study-skills will help you build the bridge between theory and practice, facilitating your continuing professional development.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module makes use of a range of teaching and learning methods.  These include tutor input, videos, group discussions, role-plays and exercises using case studies.

There will also be significant opportunities for your self-reflection. This will be stimulated from your learning on the materials covered during formal class delivery by the lecturer, and also from your “friendly consulting” with your peer students during informal class exercises. Further reflection will be prompted from guest speaker appearances and from structured experiential activities on the module, such as the formative team presentation.

The module will be supported by pre-session work and by web pages that will facilitate student learning.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the module, you will be able to:

LO1. Evaluate and apply the main competencies of leaders, distinguishing between key leadership theories, including inclusive leadership.

LO2. Critically evaluate key theories and evidence relating to leadership capabilities, including change leadership, engagement, decision-making, negotiation and conflict management.

LO3. Deploy theory and concepts for self-development, using appropriate tools and methods.

Assessment strategy

There will be two summative assessments used on this module. The first will be a portfolio developed over 8 weeks of the module (in weekly sections built from sets of questions related to material covered that week). This will build into a valuable tool for professional reference and for ongoing reflection.
The second assessment will be a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) plan, which will include elements of self-audit and the setting of specific, actionable goals. A  key component of this plan will be derived from reflection on the content of the module and on experiences on the module (including those on the formative team presentation).
