Module summary

The module focuses on enabling students to explore career opportunities related to their chosen field of study and develop strategies to enhance career development.
The module also examines professional communication skills development; the role of professional networking and work placements; tools for portfolio and professional social media development; career and employability-related services provided by the university.

Module aims

• To enable students to explore career opportunities related to their chosen field of study.
• To enable students to develop strategies for their career development.

Syllabus

An indicative syllabus includes:  an overview of graduate career opportunities;  skill assessment; the role of university studies in enhancing employability; CV and application writing; the setting-up of social media and digital media tools to build a professional online presence; developing professional communication skills; understanding the role of professional networking and work placements in enhancing employability; identifying tools of portfolio development; exploring career and employability-related services provided by the university; working as a freelance, entrepreneurship opportunities.

Learning and teaching

Teaching methods include lectures and on-line interactive learning material, tutorials, seminar sessions. Students will be expected to attend lectures and take part into on-line activities as well as comment on their readings. A blended learning strategy will be employed to enhance the learning experience. The VLE will be used as a platform to support online discussions and to facilitate formative assessment and related feedback as well as a tool to integrate useful online learning materials provided by professional organisations and other relevant sources.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1 Identify their career aspirations and assess their abilities and skills.
LO2 Explore career patterns and the skills required to achieve their career goals.
LO3 Assess strategies for the development of their career and develop tools to enhance their employability.

Assessment strategy

The assessment strategy will be based on a Portfolio of work that might include: an initial skill assessment; the profiling of a chosen career; a reflection on the relationship between undergraduate studies and potential career paths; CV and application writing; the setting-up of social media and digital media tools to build a professional online presence.
