Module summary

This module is designed to provide students with opportunities to work with progressively more autonomy in making assessments and planning interventions linked to a range of contexts for Approved Mental Health Practice. The module allows students to undertake assessment reports linked to the Mental Health Act gathering a range of background evidence. This forms a key element of a wider placement portfolio that is a key outcome of the module.

Hence the module aims to
 develop an understanding of, and an ability to apply ethical principles and relevant legislation whilst working alongside an experienced AMHP
 apply learning from other core modules to practice, including social perspectives, and working in partnerships with other professionals as well as people with lived experience
 gradually increase experience and confidence in MHA assessment, and demonstrate competence in key elements of a future lead role as an AMHP.

Syllabus

You will undertake a minimum of 37 days within a suitable agency under the direct supervision of an appropriately qualified practice educator who will allocate work to you in relation to the role of an AMHP. You will be provided

• Opportunities to visit related agencies, attend team meetings, prioritise and manage more complex direct work with people with lived experience – with increasing autonomy.
• Work alongside professionals from different disciplines in order to gain a critical understanding of the role of the agency within its organisational and legal context.
• Practice learning will be dependent on the individual circumstances and learning opportunities available in each placement appropriate to the role of an AMHP and to the assessment tasks and requirement of Schedule 2 to the Mental Health (AMHP) (Approval) (England) Regulations 2008.
• The module convenor coordinates and standardises practice across agencies, ensures that you and your practice educator have a learning agreement in place, that your progress at the midway stage is reviewed; and coordinates group support and tutorials during taught sessions.
• An AMHP handbook provided to both student and practice educator gives detailed information about placement requirements and processes.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

This module involves 260 hours/37 days of practice learning. The student will be supported by a practice educator who is an experienced AMHP. Time is set aside for preparation for assessment within the 260 hours of practice, but also in linked taught sessions to help students prepare and refine their portfolio. There are also scheduled sessions of group tutorials with AMHP leads from the agencies to reflect on and discuss practice.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

Provide demonstrable evidence of:

LO1. professionalism and the ability to maintain personal and professional boundaries, prioritise workloads, use supervision appropriately and reflect on the role of the AMHP in a range of contexts
LO2. ethical practice, including through partnership with people with lived experience.
LO3. sound communication skills and effective collaboration within multi-agency and inter-professional settings.
LO4. critical reflection and analysis and accurate application of relevant law to inform and provide a rationale for decision making

SWE AMHP competencies - B1 – 3 Autonomous practice; and C3; D1, 2, 3, 4, 5; E1, 2, 3, 4; F1, 2, 3; G1, 2, 3, 4.

Assessment strategy

There is one placement portfolio summative assessment for this module. The portfolio is not graded and the outcome of the module does not contribute to the classification of the PG Cert AMHP award.

The placement practice portfolio includes:
• Two Mental Health Act (MHA) assessment reports (2x 5,500 words) based on supervised practice where candidates have coordinated arrangements and led interviews
• One of the two reports must be completed by and discussed at the mid-term review
• Supervision log (4x750 words). (Discussions of the AMHP role and the candidate’s assessment practice are reflected on in four supervision sessions)
• Practice Educators observation checklist – at least 2 MHA assessments are directly observed by the candidates practice educator. The practice educator also receives feedback from other qualified AMHPs who are involved with supervising students on MHA assessments who rate their performance
• Practice Educators complete an interim and final report for inclusion in the portfolio that evidences the candidates meeting of specific competency requirements (‘Practice Educator reports’),
• A Section 135 warrant application is completed by the student, and another professional observes and rates their ‘courtroom skills’
