Module summary
This module provides a comprehensive introduction to definitions, prevalence, theories/models and treatments of addictive behaviours. It allows you critically examine definitions of different types of addictive behaviour; critically evaluate major psychological theories proposed to help explain different types of addictive behaviour; critically evaluate major psychology-related treatments/interventions used in the context of different types of addictive behaviours; consider comorbidity, contextual and social justice factors linked to the prevalence addictive behaviours and to varied understandings of addiction; and to appreciate links between methods used and types of knowledge produced in the context of studying addiction.

Syllabus
Areas covered will be drawn from addictive behaviour; theorising/explaining addictive behaviour; understanding different types of addictive behaviour; treating/intervening in the context of addictive behaviours; exploring the relationship between methods used and knowledge produced in the addiction field; and critical perspectives on addiction including Non-Western and historical perspectives on addiction.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module, particularly using formative feedback, and to take responsibility for identifying gaps in your learning.

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Explain and critically evaluate varied explanations for addictive behaviour.
- Explain and critically evaluate different psychological interventions used in the context of addictive behaviours.
- Consider different kinds of addictive behaviour from historical, cultural and social justice perspectives.
- Explain, critically, links between methods used to study addictive behaviours and knowledge produced about addictive behaviours.
Assessment strategy
There are two assessments in this module.
Assessment 1
Coursework essay with a choice of topics (2000 words excluding references)
Assessment 2
An addiction interests and careers reflection. This can be presented as written overview (1000 words excluding references) or as a recorded podcast/screencast (10 minutes)
You must achieve a minimum aggregate grade of 50% to pass this module.ir skills/familiarity in preparation for the summative case study exam.
