Module summary
The module seeks to provide learners with opportunities development and reflection over key skills and issues in effective practice. It applies a combination of student engagement and active learning with theoretical concepts, principles and case studies to enable to critically evaluate communication and practice skills in the context of health and social care.
This module aims to:
• Develop ability to communicate effectively and professionally
• Develop key skills in team work and problem solving
• Promote understanding of key values and ethical principles in health and social care
• Develop self-awareness and self-reflection in relation to key issues in health and social care
• Develop ability for evaluation, analysis and critical thinking through the use of case studies and problem-based learning
Syllabus
The module will address the following topics in turn:
• Student and group identity
• What does being ‘professional’ mean?
• Basics of effective communication
• Introducing values based practice
• Current critical issues in health and social care practice
• Effective responses and solutions to critical issues in health and social care
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
A range of teaching methods will be used throughout this module: lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops and discussions, case studies, and problem-based learning. Additionally, relevant and relatable media will be used where appropriate to augment learning materials and activities. Applying the flipped-classroom approach, students will be required to read set texts and articles and to discuss these in classes and seminars. Additional resources will be available online via WebLearn.
Module staff will be available to provide face-to-face, telephone, and email support to students during and outside timetabled sessions.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, the student will be able to:
1. Communicate effectively and professionally with a range of health and social care stakeholders
2. Understand the role of values and attitudes in professional practice in health and social care
3. Evaluate effective practice in health and social care
4. Reflect on personal development of key communication and practice skills
Assessment strategy
The assessment items are designed to both cover learning outcomes and promote creativity and choice of assessment.
The group presentation critically evaluating a relevant practice-based problem will test learning outcomes 1, 2 and 3, as well as develop students’ ability for problem solving and team work.
Students are required to set up and write on their own weekly blog. Blogging provides opportunities for reflection over own practice, skills and development as per learning outcome 4. For their coursework, students have to choose two blog entries critically reflecting on effective practicel to submit by the end of the module.
