Module summary
Students will consider principles, knowledge, values and policies that underpin good health and social care practice and explore the formal and informal mechanisms required to promote good practice by individuals in the workforce.
The principle aim of this module is to develop students’ understanding of the values and principles that underpin the practice of all for those who work in health and social care.
Syllabus
Theories of Principles of support: LO 1
• Confidentiality;
• Protection from risk of harm.
Impact of legislation regulation and code of practice LO 2
• Current regulatory frameworks in health and social care practice;
• Current legislation impacting health and social care delivery;
• Current codes of practice impacting professional health and social care roles;
Theories that underpin health and social care practice LO 3
• Nature of health and social care services in a diverse society;
• Inter-professional practice.
• Person-centred approaches in contemporary health and social care practice.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The lecture and workshop programme is designed to enable students to examine key issues in order to make links between theory, health and social care policy and practice.
There will be a mixed programme to include: lectures, Interactive workshops: collaborative problem-based learning, practical exercises, computer-based activities, group work, independent research, flipped learning, presentations and group work and academic and study skills development, observation and previous work experience, WebLearn, video materials & other online educational content
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Understand how principles of support are implemented in health and social care practice
2. Examine the impact of policy, legislation, regulation, codes of practice and standards on organisation policy and practice
3. Understand the theories that underpin health and social care practice
Assessment strategy
The module includes informal individual and group work exercises and an essay plan
The formal summative assessment is as follows:
1. Write a 1250 word reflective summary of how your values and principles are consistent with the professional requirements of health and social care contemporary practice.
Formative assessment will be given to help students prepare for the reflective submission in the form of reflective enquiry and peer discussion.
