Module summary
This module will allow you to integrate the knowledge gained throughout your degree and combine this with new skills and knowledge developed within your final year. At the end of the module you will be able to apply your theoretical knowledge and practical expertise to administer electrotherapeutic techniques safely and effectively. You will also develop awareness of the ethical and moral codes surrounding the use of electrotherapeutic techniques within the work place
The module focuses on the theoretical and practical knowledge of electrotherapeutic modalities such as Ultrasound and Electric Stimulation.
Guidance notes: You must pass the practical attendance in order to successfully complete the module
Prior learning requirements
Prerequisite SX5059 and SX5068
Available for Study Abroad? NO
Syllabus
Physical principles, dangers, effects and safety aspects of electrotherapy (LO 1)
Ethical matters regarding the use of electrotherapy (LO 1)
Underpinning physics, physical effects, physiological effects, therapeutic effects, dangers, and contraindications of therapeutic ultrasound, interferential therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (LO 1)
Clinical and practical applications of therapeutic ultrasound, interferential therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (LO 1, LO 2)
Critical evaluation of electrotherapy research literature (LO 3)
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The module content is provided via lectures, seminars and practical lessons. Demonstration and use of the electrotherapy modalities is the core content of the lectures. Practical lessons are in small, supervised groups, where you will practice clinical skills with support and reflection from peers.
Small group work will be used for the students to practice and gain practical skills as well as for case discussions. You will also work in small groups to practise the application of various electrotherapy modalities in relation to injuries and sport settings.
Learning outcomes
LO 1: Understand the principles and practice of maintaining electrical safety in relation to the usage of electro-medical apparatus.
LO 2: Apply the mediums of ultrasound, interferential, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapies safely and effectively to traumatised tissues.
LO 3: Critically analyse the evidence that underpins electrotherapy.
Assessment strategy
A practical examination will assess your theoretical knowledge and practical expertise to administer electrotherapeutic techniques safely and effectively. You will also be assessed via a literature review coursework where you will demonstrate the ability to critique and analyse the use of a specific electrotherapy modality. You must pass the practical assessment and also satisfy the requirement of 80% attendance.
