Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

These sessions will provide background coverage on topics under discussion and interactive learning. Students will be required to read set texts and articles and to discuss these in classes and seminars. Additional resources will be available online via WebLearn. Module staff will be available to provide face-to-face, telephone, and email support to students during and outside timetabled sessions.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

5. Think critically about contemporary issues in public health
Assessment strategy
The assessment is designed to test the student's ability to evaluate a range of issues influencing theory, policy and practice developments in Public Health. To assess achievement against the module aims and learning outcomes, there will be one assessment component. The assessment is a 2,500 word essay related to a contemporary issue in public health. Students will be expected to present the public health issue identified in the set question before taking an evidence-based approach to critically appraising the issue. A formative assessment of an essay outline will feed in to the summative assessment allowing students to get feedback on the structure and outline of the essay at least four weeks before submission of the summative assessment.
