Module summary

This module will develop your knowledge and understanding of evidence-based interventions used in mental health services (e.g., substance use; trauma; anxiety; psychological distress). This includes motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, and other interventions for a range client needs (e.g., substance misuse and psychological distress). You will learn about the theoretical frameworks and research evidence on which these interventions are based and be able to apply them in different treatment contexts. You will also develop your understanding of ethical practice in the context of treatment interventions. These skills will help to prepare you for employment in different clinical and healthcare settings.

Syllabus

Topics to be covered in the module will be drawn from: Types of treatment interventions; evidence-based practice; motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy; working with clients from diverse backgrounds in mental health contexts; inclusive and ethical practice in client interactions; factors that can impact the effectiveness of treatment interventions; clinical skill development via role-play.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module, particularly using formative feedback, and take responsibility for identifying any gaps in your learning.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:   

  1. Demonstrate a detailed understanding of treatment interventions and the theoretical frameworks on which they are based.
  2. Demonstrate the capacity to evaluate treatment interventions and their use with clients from diverse backgrounds with different needs.
  3.  Demonstrate a critical appreciation of evidence-based theories of behaviour change in the context of mental health and addictions.
  4. Demonstrate practical skills in client interactions in role-pay scenarios.

Assessment strategy

There are two assessments in this module.

Assessment 1
Demonstration of a range of motivational interviewing skills in a role-play scenario (20 minutes)

Assessment 2
A critical reflection based on the motivational interviewing role-play session completed for Assessment 1 (1500 word excluding references)

To pass the module you must achieve a minimum aggregate grade of 50%.
