Module summary

This module aims to:

This module will introduce and explore key academic skills to support students throughout the course. It will also introduce and make clear links to AE5017 in supporting students to reflect on and plan areas for development in relation to their own learning, research and professional practice skills. This module will also encourage students to foster their own research interests and reflect on research design. This aims to support progress across the course and link to their final year AE6P06 action research project.

Students will engage in critical exploration of a variety of academic texts. Key concepts relating to educational research will be explored. In particular, this will cover discussions around ethical research practice. Students will also be encouraged to begin thinking about situating research within differing social, political, cultural and environmental contexts.

The syllabus for this module will include:


Some of the key areas include:
- Embedding  a wide range of academic skills needed to study at Higher Education
- Academic, personal and professional development planning
- An introduction to education research
- Literature searching

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Theoretical input will be through seminars/workshops and online materials and exercises.  Students will also benefit from a blended learning approach through the use of weblearn for supplementary materials, links to e-books, online discussion boards and exercises such as reflective tasks. Students will also plan for and spend time in small groups preparing for their presentation assessment. Time will also be given to plan for and carry out small educational visits to enhance their studies including accessing a variety of study spaces.

Reflection and discussion are key to teaching for students and will be in the context of tutor-led sessions and exercises incorporated into online materials.  Teaching and learning strategies and methods also focus on developing professional skills used in research and workplace settings. 

Students will be given a Research, Practice and Placement Booklet, which they will refer to and use throughout this module and across the two years of the course. This booklet will also be used in all placement and school visits and can be shown and used in work with their mentors in the schools.

Assessment strategy

Students will demonstrate that they have met the learning outcomes through the submission of:
1. A presentation [10 mins]
2. A portfolio of tasks introduced and reflected on throughout the module
[2500 words]

Students will be provided with detailed guidance of format, length, and requirements.
