Module summary

This course focuses on switching technologies and router operations that support small-to-medium business networks and includes wireless local area networks (WLAN) and security concepts. Students learn key switching and routing concepts. They can perform basic network configuration and troubleshooting, identify and mitigate LAN security threats, and configure and secure a basic WLAN. covering switching, routing and wireless concepts and configurations. The material is utilising resources by our Londonmet Cisco Networking Academy and extend the  theory by  putting this into practice using Cisco switching and routing hardware as well as network-simulation environments. By the end of this course, you will be able to configure advanced functionality in routers and switches. You will also be able to perform basic troubleshooting of these components. Using security best practices, you will troubleshoot and resolve common protocol issues in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks.

Syllabus

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Determine how a router will forward traffic based on the contents of a routing table.

Explain how switching operates in a small to medium-sized business network.

Use monitoring tools and network management protocols to troubleshoot data networks.

Configure monitoring tools available for small to medium-sized business networks.

Configure initial settings on a network device.

Configure Ethernet switch ports.

Implement VLANs.

Implement static routing.

Implement DHCP on a router.

Implement network address translation (NAT).

Implement access control lists (ACLs) to filter traffic.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Module is delivered once a week in a four-hour session. Usually two-hour lecture is followed by two hours of laboratory work. Students are provided with access to the on-line curriculum (Netacad ) and are encouraged to read the material prior to lecture sessions. On the completion of lectures on specific topics students take regular in class tests for which they get an automated and/or in-person feedback. Lectures are heavily supported by hands-on relevant laboratory work such as Device Audit and Hardening, AAA and Site-to-Site VPN configurations. Students are encouraged to keep a logbook and record the summary of their practical work for reflective learning. Students are required to regularly complete advanced labs  to assess their understanding.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

LO1. be able to configure advanced functionality in routers and switches.

LO2. Experiment with a practical networking environment

LO3. be able to perform basic troubleshooting of these components

LO4. Apply a range of networking concepts and resolve common protocol issues in both IPv4 and IPv6 networks using security best practices
