Module summary

The module begins with analysing the techniques, procedures and principles of Arabic language teaching methods such as the Communicative Language Teaching, Task-based Language Teaching, and Cooperative Language Learning. In the sessions which follow, different techniques for observing and analysing Arabic language classes will be discussed. The issues discussed on observation include different types of observation (structured and unstructured), the focus of observation, and ways of recording and analysing observation. Then techniques and procedures for teaching grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation will be explored and practised as well. The module is targeted at students working or planning to work in AFL, ASL and ANL contexts.
Module Aims:

  • You will reflect on and experience teaching and learning Arabic
  • You will explore different perspectives on teaching Arabic and their implications for teaching and learning the Arabic language
  • You will broaden your knowledge and understanding of various principles and approaches to Arabic language teaching
  • You will be able to apply your teaching knowledge and skills to Arabic language classes and to your Arabic language teaching contexts

Syllabus

The learning on this module will be through lecture input at the beginning of each session followed by group discussions on the Arabic language teaching techniques and procedures and their applications to Arabic language classes and to the students’ teaching contexts. There will also be simulation of Arabic language teaching methods and observation of Arabic language classes.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Students enrolled on this module will be encouraged to engage with recommended readings in preparation for each lecture. Students will have access to a dedicated module site (Weblearn) where they will find learning activities, class materials, lecture recordings, and online forums where they can interact with peers and tutors in synchronous and asynchronous ways.
Our students will have access to the university library website and make use of electronic journals, e-books, databases and full text journals. Support for developing and improving IT skills, as well as information on other web-based study support, is available on the library website. Students will have a nominated tutor who will support and guide them through the module and who they can consult in person, by email, or designated video-conference software.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, students will have demonstrated

  1. critical knowledge and understanding of Arabic language teaching techniques and procedures in Arabic language teaching methods
  2. knowledge and understanding of techniques and procedures for teaching Arabic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  3. knowledge and understanding of techniques and procedures for teaching Arabic language subskills (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation)
  4. an ability to apply the above knowledge and skills to Arabic language classes and to their Arabic language teaching contexts

Assessment strategy

Formative feedback will be provided to students in the simulation practices.

a) The summative assessment will have two parts:
a peer teaching lesson taught by the student at the end of the module in which the student should teach one of the language skills or sub-skills by applying suitable techniques and procedures testing learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4, contributing 50% of the final module mark.
b) An observation report for which the student should observe (for two hours) and analyse an Arabic language class (in 1000 words), testing learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4, and contributing 50% of the final module mark.
