The module will provide a practical introduction to post-production using industry standard editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve).

You will get hands-on experience in editing audio and video footage, guided by step-by-step exercises.

You will develop professional practices in editing such as setting up a project, using different types of cuts and transitions, applying effects, colour and audio correction and outputting completed sequences in appropriate formats.

The module aims to:
• Develop students’ confidence and understanding of using editing software.
• Provide students with an overview of how to edit a sequence to convey a narrative.
• Take students through the stages of how to edit a short film.

Students will be introduced to a range of techniques via demonstrations and practical exercises and will be expected to edit individually to gain competence. They will work on a series of practical exercises, building up to editing a short film.

The module will include the following post-production techniques:

Software set up - Adjusting the settings in software to match the settings the film was shot at.
Planning - Organising the clips and sequences (logging).
Different types of edits - cross cuts, jump cuts, cutaways, match cuts, J and L cuts and when to use them.
Transitions - Fades, dissolves, wipes.
Rhythm and pacing - Timing of the edits and how this affects the feel of the film.
Colour correction - Matching the colour values of all the clips so they are similar.
Audio Correction – Adjusting unclear audio.
Visual Special Effects – Applying and modifying visual effects.
Colour Grading - Transforming the overall mood or tone of the film.
Output - Saving and exporting for the big screen or YouTube.
Health and safety – Learning about how to work safely using a risk assessment.

Teaching and learning will be carried out through lectures, screenings, and exercises. Lectures will include critical analysis through discussion of a range of examples of to explore post-production techniques. Screenings include short films and clips from notable filmmakers. Critical evaluation and reflection will be an integral part of class discussion and coursework.

During workshops students will be introduced to specific principles and techniques which will be demonstrated by the lecturer or technical demonstrator and then practiced individually in class. Outside of class students will have access to appropriate software for practice and to complete the edits for their assessments.

WeLearn materials include a range of readings, websites, and video-based learning materials such as short films and full-length film and TV drama through Box of Broadcasts which students are encouraged to engage with throughout the module.

Students are encouraged to read selected texts prior to attending class, and for the duration of the module to aid their skills understanding.

On successful completion of this module, the student will be able to:

LO1: Understand how to structure a story via the editing process and edit a sequence confidently using industry standard editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve).
L02: Use effects and transitions to manipulate audio and video.
LO3: Set up video projects in industry standard editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve) and output video files using appropriate formats.
LO4: Demonstrate a basic level of analytical, reflective, and critical skills e.g. being able to write an evaluation of their work.
