Module summary

Foundations of Professional Practice module introduces students to the standards of conduct, performance and ethics required in the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (2018). The module aims to provide students with a  knowledge of contemporary issues in nursing practice including legislation, professional accountability, ethics, and the use of an inter-professional working and multidisciplinary approach.

The module will integrate a person-centred framework to develop students’ skills in communication to support patients, clients, service users and their families, promote inter-professional working, and leading others. It will introduce the concept of continuing personal and professional development (CPPD) and explores tools for effective reflection on practice and the requirement for career-long learning.

Prior learning requirements

This module serves as an introduction to health and social care services in the UK. It will look at current trends and careers in nursing (primary, secondary and tertiary care), and explore how the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code guides the practice and conduct of nurses and how the NMC regulates the actions of the nursing profession. It will focus especially on ethics, values and accountability in the NMC Code (NMC LO 1.1), and how these can be achieved as a student nurse. As most nursing occurs within the NHS, we will explore the NHS constitution and its values, principles of courage, transparency and the professional duty of candour.

The module will support students to develop communication skills and strategies with colleagues and people at all stages of life and with a range of mental, physical, cognitive and behavioural health challenges (NMC LO 1.11). It will also enable students to begin to recognise and report (with support and supervision) any situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care outcomes (NMC LO 1.3).

Principles of reflective practice will be studied and promoted enable you to consider how students can make a difference in care giving and develop assertiveness and build confidence. Themes of understanding equality and diversity will be introduced preparing to prepare students to confidently challenge discriminatory behaviour (NMC LO 1.4).

The reflective approach used within this module will enable students to seek and respond to support and feedback to develop professional knowledge and skills (NMC LO 1.17). Students will also be enabled to develop skills in coping with the demands of professional practice; recognising signs of vulnerability in themselves and colleagues and the actions required to minimise the risks to health (NMC LO 1.5)

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Student learning and understanding will be developed through an integrated programme of lectures, and other sessions including directed coursework and on-line resources. Lectures will be used to provide a conceptual framework with expert input from staff in clinical practice as well as members of our BeSpoke group of People with Lived Experience of Health and Social Care. Seminars and workshops will be used to give students experiences of role play and simulated scenarios as well as to gain communication skills. Clinical and reflective supervision activities will be used to explore professional practice.

A web-based virtual learning environment is available to support, reinforce and test student understanding and access to additional learning resources. Students would be expected to use the online resources for assisted study.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Apply an awareness of the concept of contemporary nursing practice and importance of the 6 C’s of caring and NHS core values, and reflect on any feedback and achievements.

2. Act with support within a person-centred approach to nursing care and the NMC Code, taking responsibility for the nature and quality of care provided.

3. Identify and apply effective care and communication skills for with patients, clients and service users in practice and simulation, demonstrating an awareness of, and the ability to challenge, discriminatory behaviour: drawing upon the university Education for Social Justice Framework (ESJF).
