Module summary

In this module, students will work towards becoming autonomous users of the target language. (CEFR Level B2/C1) In the first semester. In the second semester, they will work towards becoming autonomous users of the target language. (CEFR Level C2) Students will learn how to use Arabic in a wide range of contexts, with appropriate register. The course further extends the accurate use of grammatical structures and vocabulary. It also focuses on intercultural communication skills and cultural aspects of Arab speaking countries.

The course is structured around class time, autonomous learning and guided WebLearn materials. The course is structured around class time, autonomous learning and guided WebLearn materials. The module is adaptable to the language abilities of students and can be taught to students studying in different years.
The aims of this module are:

•  To improve students’ linguistic competence in Arabic in all skills towards a proficiency/native speaker level (level C1/C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference)
• To further develop appropriate language learning strategies to encourage effective independent learning of Arabic
• To focus on the cultural contexts of Arabic speaking countries
To enhance student employability and transferable skills

Prior learning requirements

Completion of OAL003 (Intensive) or a similar course.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Learning and teaching strategies will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Learners will actively participate in individual and group activities in class and autonomously, using online resources and tools available on Weblearn, as well as paper based materials. They will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  By the end of the module students should be able to:
• Speaking:
Deliver a fluent presentation on a prepared topic
Use a  wide range of language to give clear descriptions 
Express viewpoints on general topics in a fluent manner
• Writing:
Write accurately and in an appropriate register on a variety of topics related to personal matters, current affairs and areas of professional expertise

Assessment strategy

• The module will be assessed through a presentation in the autumn semester and a coursework and a presentation in the spring semester. The presentations will assess learning outcome 1 while the coursework will assess learning outcomes 2.
• Formative assessment supports students in developing for summative assessment
• Feedback on assessment is timely, constructive and developmental.
• Processes for marking assessments and for moderating marks are clearly articulated and consistently operated by those involved in the assessment process
