Module summary
The aim of this module is to explore how psychologists work with diverse populations. You will be introduced to the nine protected characteristics as outlined in the Equalities Act 2010 and issues relating to inclusion, equality and diversity. In addition, you will be offered the opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate your own values and beliefs and how these might shape your understanding of working with diverse populations.
This module will facilitate your progression to level 4 of the BSc Psychology course and enhance your knowledge and transferable skills necessary for working ethically with diverse populations in various professional contexts.
Syllabus
Areas covered will be drawn from: The nine protected characteristics as outlined in the Equality Act 2010; diversity, inclusion, equality, equity & social change, working with diverse cultures and socioeconomic status groups; refugees/ asylum seekers’ needs; working with diverse abilities; sexuality and gender; white privilege and white fragility; and ethics in the workplace.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures and interactive workshops and seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module, particularly using formative assessments.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will:
1. Demonstrate an awareness and critical understanding the nine protected characteristics as outlined in the Equality Act 2010, concepts of inclusion, diversity, equality, equity and social justice
2. Demonstrate an awareness and critical understanding of structural and systemic barriers to inclusion and potential difficulties and the barriers faced by groups at risk of discrimination and marginalisation.
3. Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of how your beliefs system might shape your understanding of diversity and inclusion and demonstrate an awareness of how to become agents of change
