Module summary

The aim of this module is to introduce you to how psychology is practiced in different professions including academia, clinical psychology, counselling psychology, health psychology, forensic psychology, educational psychology, and coaching. You will learn how skills developed in this and other modules can be applied in these different professions. This will extend to related employment opportunities and you will be provided with key skills relevant to pursuing further academic study and a career in psychology. This module will facilitate your progression to level 4 of the BSc (Hons) Psychology.

Syllabus

Areas covered will be drawn from: what psychologists do in clinical, counselling, forensic, educational psychology, and coaching; and career routes into each of these areas.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of classes and interactive workshops and seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module, particularly using formative assessments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will:

1. Understand what psychologists in different areas of the discipline do and the types of issues they address.
2. Understand key ethical principles relevant to the discipline in both research and practice.
3. Understand the skills required to excel in different areas of psychological practice.
