Module summary

This module will allow you to develop the knowledge and skills required to become a successful psychology student and ease your progression through the course and into a meaningful and rewarding profession. The module will equip you with a toolkit of intellectual and practical skills, including skills in written and spoken communication, digital literacy, time management, decision-making, record keeping, and self-reflection. It will allow you to critically consider the nature of employment, including issues related to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and to develop creative, non-discriminatory, and socially responsible ways of working in psychology and beyond. You will also develop the skills required to identify limitations in your own knowledge and professional behaviour and how to address them as you progress through the course. The module thus provides a platform for future professional skill and career development in psychology and related professions.

Syllabus

Areas covered will be drawn from: transferable skill development (time-management, planning, and organisation, communication, digital literacy, interpersonal skills); personal skills development (e.g., ethical, inclusive, and socially responsible behaviour; self-reflection); and employment and career development skills (e.g., identifying and articulating your strengths; creating a LinkedIn profile; writing CVs, cover letters and personal statements).

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work will provide opportunities to receive constructive tutor and peer feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and take responsibility for identifying limitations in your learning and/or professional behaviour.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate effective practical, academic, and employment skills.
2. Demonstrate an ability to apply and reflect upon the underlying concepts and principles of ethics and social responsibility within academic and employment contexts.
3. Understand and articulate your personal and professional attributes, skills, competencies, and achievements; and identify your need for further training, skill development, or new competencies to facilitate your progression through the course and into a successful career.
