Module summary
The aim of this module is to develop your understanding of: (1) how psychology as a discipline has developed across time and cultures; (2) key studies that helped to shape contemporary psychology; (3) past and current controversies in psychology; and (4) the historical and cultural specificity of psychological knowledge. These outcomes will help to contextualise the topics introduced throughout the course and appreciate the limitations with many assumptions that underpin different aspects of the discipline. The module will thus provide a platform for you to progress to level 5 and 6 and to question and think critically about psychological knowledge.
Syllabus
Areas covered will be drawn from: the origins and development of psychology; key figures, studies, and approaches that helped to shape contemporary psychology; the historical and cultural specificity of psychological knowledge; past and present controversies in psychology and their impact on the discipline.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work will provide opportunities to receive constructive tutor and peer feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and take responsibility for identifying limitations in your learning and skills development and taking appropriate action.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will:
1. Understand the origins and development of psychology as a discipline and be aware of different perspectives and approaches in psychology their historical and cultural contexts.
2. Be aware of past and present controversies in psychology and their impact on the discipline.
3. Be able to explain how historical and cultural influences have shaped contemporary theory, research, and application in psychology and psychology related professions.
