Module summary

The aim of this module is to develop your knowledge and understanding of different types of psychological interventions designed to address a range of personal and social issues. You will be introduced to a range of evidence-based psychological interventions anchored in contemporary theory and research. This may include interventions to promote subjective states of well-being (e.g., growth mindset, self-affirmation, reappraisal, resilience); to help people experiencing alcohol or drug dependence; and to reduce prejudice and promote positive intergroup relations. You will be introduced to how psychological interventions are designed, the literature on which they are based, how they work, how they can be applied in a wide range of contexts (e.g., healthcare, education, relationships), and how they can help in the achievement of social justice goals. The module has a strong applied focus, and the knowledge and skills developed in the module are highly desired in many employment contexts.

Syllabus

Topics will be drawn from: psychological interventions; designing evidence-based interventions; understanding how psychological interventions work; applying psychological interventions; evaluating psychological interventions; multidisciplinary interventions.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work will provide opportunities to receive constructive tutor and peer feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and to take responsibility for identifying gaps in your knowledge and skill development. 

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate classic and contemporary theory and research on underpinning psychological interventions and how they work.

2. Demonstrate understanding of different ways that psychologists can help to resolve a range of personal and social problems and achieve social justice goals.

3. Design an evidence-based psychological intervention to address a personal or social problem and explain how it would work.
