Module summary

The module introduces you to the epistemological, ontological, and methodological underpinnings of qualitative research in psychology. It will allow you to develop knowledge and practical skills related to different types of qualitative research and opportunities to put this knowledge and skills into practice. You will learn how to design and conduct qualitative studies in psychology, collect and analyse qualitative data, and report qualitative research studies in accordance with professional publication standards and the principles of open science. The knowledge and skills developed in this module are highly valued in different employment settings (e.g., communication, negotiation, high-level analysis, problem-solving, decision-making, project management).

Syllabus

Areas covered will be drawn from: principles, practices, and premises in qualitative research in psychology; research design; generating and collecting qualitative data; analytical frameworks and techniques; ethical issues; open science; and writing research reports.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module, particularly using formative assessments, and to take responsibility for identifying gaps in your knowledge or understanding.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Understand the epistemological and ontological underpinnings of different types of qualitative research.
2. Demonstrate the ability to choose the most appropriate data collection/analysis methods while applying appropriate ethical considerations.
3. Design, conduct and interpret qualitative data using appropriate methods and tools and present qualitative research in accordance with professional publication standards and the principles of open science.
