Module summary

This aim of this module is to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in qualitative research with an emphasis on non-traditional qualitative methods that are novel in psychological inquiry. Through active learning you will explore the links between epistemology, methodology and theoretical explanations in psychology. In doing this, you will be introduced to, and develop practical skills in using, a range of creative qualitative approaches to data collection and data analysis such as social media, visual, multi-modal, and Queer and decolonial research methodologies. A strong focus on ethical and inclusive research practice runs through the module topics. The knowledge and skills developed in the module will leave you well positioned to progress to further study and employment in various professional contexts

Syllabus

Topics covered in the module will be drawn from: epistemological and methodological positions in qualitative research; approaches to data collection (e.g., social media research, photo-elicitation techniques, internet-based research, art-based research, archival sources, diary techniques); methods of data analysis – e.g. contextualism (grounded theory, ethnography); constructivism (discourse analysis, narrative analysis); and phenomenology (interpretative phenomenologial analysis); Designing qualitative research studies using novel and creative methods; Reporting qualitative research; ethical issues in qualitative research.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops and seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work in seminars will provide you with constructive tutor and feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and to take responsibility for your own learning including identifying developmental needs.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Provide a convincing rationale for a qualitative research study, apply appropriate criteria to evaluate different approaches and methods, and demonstrate understanding of ethical considerations.
2. Use a range of creative methods of qualitative data collection and analysis, present research findings in informative ways, and draw appropriate conclusions from qualitative research studies.
3. Write a qualitative research report in line with professional publication guidelines.
