Module summary

The aim of this module is to develop your understanding of core concepts, approaches, and treatments in psychosexual therapy. You will learn about treatments for a range of sexual dysfunctions and their ethical application in varied contexts, including individual and relationship counselling, psychosexual education, and cognitive behavioural therapy. You will learn about the evidence bases of these and other types of treatments and how to conduct psychosexual assessments and create case formulations. The module will help you to develop skills in clinical communication and reflective practice which are essential for anyone considering a career in this field. These skills will provide a platform for further training and employment in healthcare settings.

Syllabus

Areas covered will be drawn from: development of psychosexual presentations; case formulations based on psychosexual and relationship dynamics; different assessment tools and therapeutic templates to support psychosexual and relationship difficulties; critical self reflective practice in healthcare; ethical practice; working with diverse groups in practice

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops and seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work in seminars will provide you with constructive tutor and feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and to take responsibility for your own learning including identifying developmental needs.

On completion of the module, you will:

1. Have a critical awareness of core concepts, approaches, and treatments in psychosexual therapy.
2. Be able to demonstrate an appreciation of the role psychologists and counsellors have in supporting sexual wellbeing in diverse groups.
