Module summary

Focusing on the student’s own evolving photographic practice, the PH5000 Project Work 2 module provides an opportunity for students to develop and to explore their creative identity through responding to photography briefs and using technical skills and research methods supported within the course. The module considers the relationship between method, medium and meaning, with reference to relevant theory, as well as traditional and contemporary practices.

The module PH5000 Project Work 2 is shared by, serves and sustains the awards in the BA Fashion Photography and BA Photography courses, delivered in a seamless and integral relationship with the work of other core modules being studied in the level, including the Critical and Contextual Studies modules.

Students are encouraged to act as autonomous learners, taking increasing responsibility for the progress of their project work. Work from this module is contextualised in the form of a printed publication.

This module aims to enable students to continue to build and to develop key skills of interpretation and knowledge in the development of individual photographic practice and creative individual identity. Through assigned briefs and projects, the module aims to provide the basis for students to both consolidate and develop further concepts and principles in visual practice relevant to contemporary debates in photography. Building upon skills acquired in the other subject specific modules, the module aims to facilitate learning in the selection, testing and informed use of materials, equipment, facilities, research and processes relevant to their enquiry into and interpretation of the theme of a given project.

Prior learning requirements

Pre-requisite: PH4000

Syllabus

At the beginning of the module, its aims and key concepts will be outlined to all students. There will presentations, group critiques and tutorials that will guide students in the processes, practices and approaches necessary for completing photographic works to a professional standard and in a manner that addresses their creative and contextual concerns.

Over the course of two semesters, students will personally interpret briefs in order to demonstrate the application and evaluation of research and experimentation aimed at completing photographic projects including, but not limited to, works for publication in printed magazines, video works and works addressing photography as an expanded medium. (Semester 1: Learning Outcome 1, 2 and 3). (Semester 2: Learning Outcome 4, 5 and 6).

At the end of each semester students will present their photography project work and its development to an audience at a time appointed by tutors.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Scheduled teaching provides the guidance and foundation to ensure that independent study is effective in addressing the module’s learning outcomes and assessment tasks.

In-class activity makes use of varied student-centred approaches such as active, flipped and blended learning, so that a range of learning strategies is deployed, and individual learning styles are accommodated. Information is provided through a range of means and sources to minimise and remove barriers to successful progress through the module. The course team seeks to embed the University’s Education for Social Justice Framework in fostering learning that is enjoyable, accessible, relevant and that takes account of the social and cultural context and capital of its students.

Activities foster peer-to-peer community building and support for learning. Interim formative feedback points help students to reflect on their progress and receive help to identify the opportunity for improvement in learning strategies and outcomes in developing the project work. Throughout the module, students build a body of work that responds to project briefs, including written reflections on progress and achievement.

Learning outcomes

1. demonstrate and communicate approaches to initiating and planning a photographic or lens based briefed Semester 1 project for publication in a printed magazine;

2. demonstrate and communicate effectively the evaluation and application of experimentation, to complete a briefed Semester 1 photographic or lens-based project, for publication in a printed magazine;

3. demonstrate and communicate effective evaluation and application of research to complete a briefed Semester 1 photographic or lens based project for publication in a printed magazine;

4. demonstrate and communicate approaches to initiating and planning a photographic or lens based briefed Semester 2 project;

5. demonstrate and communicate effective evaluation and application of experimentation to complete a briefed Semester 2 photographic or lens based project;

6. demonstrate and communicate effective evaluation and application of research to complete a briefed Semester 2 photographic or lens based project

Assessment strategy

The assessment strategy includes formative assessments that will take place at mid-semester in the form of tutorial or review with feedback designed to encourage and help students to develop and improve their work. These will inform the student of their progress through the module.
Summative assessment takes place in week 13 (Week 1 of January Assessment period)
and week 28.

At the Semester 1 summative submission point students will submit the following elements covering LO1, LO2, and LO3:

• Illustrated Presentation delivered to an audience summarising project development.
• A journal outlining project planning, scheduling, experimentation, research, evaluation to complete a body of work.
• A body of completed creative work.

At the Semester 2 summative submission point students will submit the following elements covering LO4, LO5, and LO6:

• Illustrated Presentation delivered to an audience summarising project development.
• A journal outlining project planning, scheduling, experimentation, research, evaluation to complete a body of work.
• A body of completed creative work.

Feedback will address the strengths and areas for development of individual summative submissions in relation to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

Work will be assessed against the learning outcomes in relation to the following criteria:
• Appropriate use of problem solving, testing and experimentation
• Appropriate use of research methods and enquiry
• Quality of analysis and interpretation
• Knowledge of relevant photographic and creative techniques and practices
• Quality of communication and presentation
• Management of own learning and personal professional development
