Module summary

The module offers a general insight into the key theoretical concepts and their application in the professions within and around sports and physical activity.

Aiming at developing the students’ critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving skills through theory and applied activities, this module will provide great awareness about common scenarios and issues involving professionals in the field.

Practical Approaches to Current Issues in Sports will include engaging classes to help students understand the world of sports and knowledge in the field; practical experiences and discussions regarding professional values and morals, as well as the role of society, institutions, and politics in sports; and activities using logic when arriving at conclusions and making decisions regarding sport related issues.

Students in this module will achieve a better understanding of professions in sports and the ability to pragmatically and theoretically deal with common challenges in the field of sport and physical activity.

● Understanding the world of sports
● The source and validity of knowledge in sports
● Professional values and morals
● The role of society and institutions in sport
● The role of politics in sports
● Arriving at conclusions and making decisions
● History of philosophy

All topics will encompass LO1, LO2, and LO3.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module material is delivered by a combination of lecture, seminar and practical sessions. Seminar sessions will involve group discussions and individual/group work based on the lectures. There will be support of web based blended learning utilising the virtual learning environment to support the students’ progress. In total there will be three contact hours per week.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

1. Apply an understanding of theoretical concepts to discuss common issues within and around sport professions.
2. Develop an awareness of theoretical concepts to make decisions regarding issues within and around sport professions.
3. Understand professional morals and values which are pertinent to sport professions

Assessment strategy

This module will be assessed by an essay-style written submission that invites students to select a case study scenario, prepare an analysis of the issues involved, and suggest working interventions to address the issues.

To pass the module students need to achieve a minimum aggregate mark of 40%.
