Module summary

This module offers a practical exploration of the most pressing and current issues in sport and exercise, equipping you with the tools to critically engage with real-world challenges. You will investigate topics such as performance enhancing drugs in sport, athlete mental health, inclusion and diversity, ethical dilemmas, and the growing influence of technology and media. Through applied tasks and case studies, you will learn how to assess these issues and develop informed, practical responses.

You will also explore the broader social and cultural contexts that shape sport, including barriers to participation and the role of sport in promoting health and community engagement. This module encourages you to think critically, work collaboratively, and apply theory to practice.
By engaging with this module, you will develop the ability to analyse complex issues in sport and respond with practical, evidence-based strategies. You will strengthen your communication, teamwork, and decision-making skills through scenario-based learning. You will also gain insight into the professional demands and opportunities within the sport sector.

Exploration of contemporary issues in sport, including inclusion, diversity, and athlete welfare
Ethical challenges in sport, such as doping, fair play, and governance
The impact of technology and digital media on performance, coaching, and fan engagement
Mental health and psychological support strategies for athletes and sport participants
Barriers to participation and strategies for promoting equity in sport and physical activity
Applied case studies and scenario-based learning to develop problem-solving skills

 

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module material is delivered by a combination of lecture and seminar sessions. Seminar sessions will involve group discussions and individual/group work based on the lectures. There will be support of web based blended learning utilising the virtual learning environment to support the students’ progress.
