Module summary
The module builds on the learning and skills developed in Semester 1 by emphasising the understanding of pathology and clinical presentation of musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory conditions with relatively stable clinical presentations, enabling students to develop safe and structured approaches to patient management.
Emphasis is placed on adapting assessment strategies, monitoring for deterioration, and managing higher-risk presentations safely. Students further develop collaborative problem identification, goal setting, and rehabilitation planning using biopsychosocial principles.
The module supports the development of clinical reasoning, enabling students to justify treatment progression, modify interventions, and plan discharge and long-term self-management. Interdisciplinary working, community-based rehabilitation, and service navigation are embedded.
Throughout the module, inclusive practice, ethical decision-making, and effective communication are embedded in accordance with the Education for Social Justice Framework. Learning is delivered through blended approaches including lectures, practical workshops, simulation, case-based learning, and guided reflection.
Learning is delivered through integrated lectures, practical sessions, multidisciplinary simulations, and placement-linked learning. Inclusive pedagogical approaches support student engagement and wellbeing. This module provides essential preparation for advanced and complex rehabilitation learning in Level 6.

Syllabus
Knowledge
This module introduces the pathology and clinical presentation of applied management of spinal, postural, congenital, and post-surgical musculoskeletal conditions; Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and motor neurone diseases (ALS/MNS); advanced restrictive and infective lung disease, respiratory and cardiac failure, and post-transplant rehabilitation (LO1).
Skills
Students develop skills in advanced subjective assessment, integrated objective examination, and functional outcome measures including functional testing, neurological and cardiopulmonary assessment, and monitoring of physiological responses (LO2). Teaching addresses red flag screening, deterioration management, safeguarding, and referral pathways (LO2 & 3).
Attitudes
Learning activities focus on collaborative rehabilitation planning, progression and relapses management and long-term self-management approaches (LO3 & 4). Students practise selecting and applying introductory rehabilitation, exercise, manual therapy, and education strategies in order to resolving patients’ issues (LO4).
Case-based learning, simulation, and reflective activities support professional communication, documentation, and ethical practice (LO1 -4).
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The teaching in this module comprises scheduled teaching, guided independent study, and reflective activities adopting blended and inclusive learning approaches.
- Scheduled sessions include lectures, tutorials, practical workshops, simulation-based learning, and supervised skills practice. These activities promote collaborative learning, and peer feedback, within supportive learning environments.
- Digital resources, recorded lectures, interactive case studies, and online discussion boards are used to enhance accessibility and flexibility. Universal Design for Learning principles ensure materials are presented in multiple formats, including visual, auditory, and written resources to cater for the needs of students.
- Guided independent study encourages students to engage with academic literature, clinical guidelines, and digital learning materials. Practice time enables students to consolidate psychomotor skills in safe, inclusive environments.
- Assessment preparation is integrated throughout the module through formative feedback, peer review, and scaffolded learning tasks. Students are supported to develop time-management, academic writing, and professional communication skills.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students should be able to:
- Apply knowledge of pathology, presentation and progression of selected central, progressive and post‑surgical musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions to inform physiotherapy practice.
- Select, adapt and justify assessment strategies and outcome measures, demonstrating enhanced clinical safety reasoning through red flag screening, monitoring for deterioration and appropriate escalation.
- Formulate collaboratively agreed problem lists and rehabilitation goals, addressing participation, environmental factors, long‑term needs and multidisciplinary working within integrated care pathways.
- Plan, implement and evaluate clinically reasoned rehabilitation programmes, including progression, monitoring, patient education and discharge planning.
