Module summary

This module develops students’ ability to manage complex, high-risk, and unstable clinical presentations across musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiorespiratory practice. It focuses on critical illness, intensive care rehabilitation, complex cardiac and respiratory conditions, and neurological trauma, including traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

Building on the learning achieved in the Integrated Physiotherapy Clinical Practice I and II, students develop advanced understanding of pathology, disease progression, and multi-system interaction in complex cases. Emphasis is placed on selecting and adapting assessment strategies, monitoring for deterioration, clearing red flags, and managing risk through appropriate escalation and multidisciplinary working.

Students are supported to identify patient problems collaboratively, integrating biopsychosocial, environmental, and service-related factors. Teaching develops advanced clinical reasoning skills to justify assessment choices, treatment priorities, rehabilitation planning and discharge packages in uncertain and time-pressured environments.

Learning is delivered through integrated lectures, practical workshops, simulation, case-based learning, and reflective activities, inclusive pedagogical approaches and Universal Design for Learning principles support accessibility and student engagement. This module prepares students for advanced rehabilitation planning and autonomous practice at graduation.

Syllabus

Knowledge

This module develops advanced competence in the assessment and management of complex, multi-system, and high-risk clinical presentations across musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory, paediatric, specialist, and community contexts. Teaching progresses from understanding complexity in acute and critical care environments to long-term rehabilitation, specialist services, and transition to professional practice.

The module explores complexity frameworks in healthcare, including systems pathways, patient journey mapping, ethical decision-making, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Students analyse complex case studies to identify interacting biological, psychological, and social factors influencing presentation and recovery (LO1, LO4).

Cardiorespiratory complexity is addressed through management of critically ill patients, including multiple organ failure, sepsis, ICU attachments, ARDS, COVID syndrome, ICU-acquired weakness, and critical care rehabilitation (LO1–LO3). Students develop advanced assessment and monitoring skills, including interpretation of ECGs, management of arrhythmias, ischaemic heart disease, infective endocarditis, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and post-thoracic surgical rehabilitation (LO2, LO3, LO5). Emphasis is placed on escalation pathways, deterioration recognition, and high-risk decision-making.

Neurological complexity includes traumatic CNS injuries, motor neuron disease, vestibular disorders, falls rehabilitation, frailty, and progressive neurological conditions. Students explore advanced neurorehabilitation planning, tone management, balance retraining, fatigue management, cognitive and behavioural considerations, and long-term adaptation (LO1–LO5).

Advanced musculoskeletal practice addresses persistent pain management services, enhanced MSK rehabilitation reasoning, return-to-sport planning including epidemiology and load management, orthopaedic surgical rehabilitation, peripheral vascular disease, amputee rehabilitation, and specialist hand therapy (LO1, LO2, LO5). Students justify intervention selection and progression using advanced clinical reasoning and outcome measurement.

Paediatric complexity is addressed through orthopaedic surgery in children, normal child development and developmental delay, cerebral palsy and rehabilitation, Erb’s palsy, facial palsy, acute paediatric respiratory ICU management, and learning disabilities. Students consider safeguarding, developmental frameworks, and family-centred care (LO1–LO4).

Specialist and community contexts include dementia, mental health, cancer rehabilitation, palliative care, pelvic health, maternity care, and on-call training. Emphasis is placed on compassionate practice, communication, ethical complexity, and service navigation (LO4–LO6).

Skills

Throughout the year, students repeatedly apply a structured complex management approach: analysing pathology and presentation; selecting and adapting assessment strategies; clearing red flags and managing risk; collaboratively identifying problems and goals; planning and progressing clinically reasoned rehabilitation; and preparing discharge and long-term self-management plans (LO2–LO5). Longitudinal case discussions, multidisciplinary simulations, and portfolio development support integration of knowledge, skills, and professional identity.

Attitudes

The module culminates in preparation for autonomous practice, including caseload prioritisation, escalation decision-making, documentation standards, and transition-to-practice readiness (LO6). Case-based learning, simulation, and reflective activities support professional communication, documentation, and ethical practice (LO6).

 

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The teaching in this module comprises scheduled teaching, guided independent study, and reflective activities adopting blended and inclusive learning approaches. 

  1. Scheduled sessions include lectures, tutorials, practical workshops, simulation-based learning, and supervised skills practice. These activities promote collaborative learning, and peer feedback, within supportive learning environments.
  2. Digital resources, recorded lectures, interactive case studies, and online discussion boards are used to enhance accessibility and flexibility. Universal Design for Learning principles ensure materials are presented in multiple formats, including visual, auditory, and written resources to cater for the needs of students.
  3. Guided independent study encourages students to engage with academic literature, clinical guidelines, and digital learning materials. Practice time enables students to consolidate psychomotor skills in safe, inclusive environments.
  4. Assessment preparation is integrated throughout the module through formative feedback, peer review, and scaffolded learning tasks. Students are supported to develop time-management, academic writing, and professional communication skills.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, students should be able to:
