Module summary
This module enables students to undertake an independent research project relevant to physiotherapy practice, under academic supervision. It develops students’ ability to design, conduct, analyse, and present a research study or systematic literature review using appropriate ethical and methodological frameworks.
Building on research literacy and evidence-based practice skills developed at Levels 4 and 5, students develop advanced competencies in critical appraisal, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Emphasis is placed on ethical research conduct, inclusivity, and the social impact of physiotherapy research in diverse communities.
Students are supported to formulate clinically relevant research questions, select appropriate qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approaches, and apply rigorous analytical techniques. The module also trains students on dissemination skills, enabling them to communicate findings effectively to academic and professional audiences.
Learning is delivered through workshops, supervision meetings, online resources, and peer learning activities. Universal Design for Learning principles ensure accessibility and flexibility.

Syllabus
Knowledge:
This module introduces principles of applied health research, including formulation of research questions, literature searching, and critical appraisal (LO1, LO2).
Teaching addresses qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods research designs, including surveys, experimental studies, observational research, interviews, focus groups, and systematic literature reviews (LO3).
Ethical approval processes, informed consent, data protection, and inclusive research practices are embedded throughout (LO1, LO6). Students develop skills in data management, statistical analysis, and qualitative coding using appropriate software where applicable (LO4).
Skills:
Module allows students to practice academic writing, research reporting standards, and dissemination through presentations and posters (LO5).
Attitudes:
Supervised project development and peer feedback support independent learning and professional research identity. Students engage in reflective activities addressing health inequalities, cultural competence, and participatory research approaches in physiotherapy (LO6).
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The teaching in this module comprises scheduled teaching, guided independent study, and reflective activities adopting blended and inclusive learning approaches.
- Scheduled sessions include workshops and supervised academic meetings. These activities promote collaborative learning, and peer feedback, within supportive learning environments.
- Digital resources, recorded lectures, interactive case studies, and online discussion boards are used to enhance accessibility and flexibility. Universal Design for Learning principles ensure materials are presented in multiple formats, including visual, auditory, and written resources to cater for the needs of students.
- Guided independent study encourages students to engage with academic literature, clinical guidelines, and digital learning materials. Practice time enables students to consolidate psychomotor skills in safe, inclusive environments.
- Assessment preparation is integrated throughout the module through formative feedback, peer review, and scaffolded learning tasks. Students are supported to develop time-management, academic writing, and professional communication skills.
