Module summary

This module is designed to equip you with a range of practical academic and professional skills enable you to study and conduct scientific research at postgraduate level in line with the principles of open science. It will provide opportunities for you to develop the reflective skills required for working in mental health settings. More specifically, through experiential learning methods, the module will equip you with: (1) core intellectual and academic skills to assist your progression through the course and into further study or employment (e.g., written and oral communication skills); (2) professional skills to prepare you for research methods and dissertation modules (e.g., numeracy skills; data management); (3) reflective skills required for employment in mental health settings; and (4) the ability to apply the skills developed in the module – along with your knowledge of ethics, research and specific clinical issues – in different academic and employment contexts. The module thus provides you with a firm foundation for your progression through the course and into further postgraduate training or employment in a range of social or healthcare professions.

Syllabus

Topics covered in the module will be drawn from: academic and intellectual skills development (e.g., written and oral communication; time-management); professional skills development (e.g., searching databases and database management); reflective practice (e.g., critical self-reflection, self-awareness); creating a personal strengths profile; ethics and social responsibility; careers in mental health and healthcare sectors.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning outcomes will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect upon your learning throughout the module, particularly using formative assessments, and to take responsibility for identifying gaps in your learning.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate effective practical, academic, and employment related skills.
  2. Demonstrate ability to apply and reflect upon the underlying concepts and principles of professional practice (including those related to ethical and inclusive practice).
  3. Understand and articulate your personal, professional and employment related skills, competencies, and achievements, and identify areas for further development to facilitate your progression to a successful career.

Assessment strategy

There is one assessment in this module with several components.

1. Written or spoken answers to two interview questions (1000 words/10 minutes).
2. Written or spoken reflection on your ability to engage in ethical and inclusive practice (1000 words/10 minutes)
3. Written or spoken reflection on how your personal strengths make you a good fit for a chosen occupation or role (1000 words/10 minutes).
4. An infographic depicting your 5-year career plan and an accompanying written overview of how you plan to achieve your career aims (500 words).

You must obtain a minimum aggregate grade of 50% to pass this module
