Module summary
This module will allow you to develop your understanding of the ethical principles outlined in the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy’s (BACP) Ethical Framework. It will help you to develop your understanding of core aspects of ethical practice, including safeguarding, confidentiality, data protection, and ensuring the integrity of the practitioner-client relationship. It will enhance your knowledge of policy and legislation relevant to counselling and psychotherapy, including the Mental Health Act (2007), the Mental Capacity Act (2005), the Children’s Act (2004), and the Health and Care Act (2022). The module will support your capacity to work safely and ethically in clinical and healthcare settings with vulnerable individuals and groups, your ability to assess and appropriately manage different types of risk and will thus help to maintain high standards in the counselling and related professions.

Syllabus
Topics will be drawn from: ethical guidelines and codes of professional practice; current legislation relevant to counselling professions; confidentiality in counselling practice; risk assessment and evaluation in counselling practice; personal and cultural influences on the therapeutic relationship and client engagement.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of interactive workshops and seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning and self-managed
independent study. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and maintain the high standards expected of the counselling professions.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will:
- Have a solid understanding of core ethical principles and codes of ethical practice in counselling and psychotherapy.
- Have a critical awareness of current legislation relevant to counselling practice.
- Be able to work safely and ethically with vulnerable individuals and groups with differing expectations and needs.
- Be aware of how your own background can influence the therapeutic relationship and client engagement.
