Module summary

This module is designed to support the development of your theoretical knowledge and practical skills and your professional identity as a counsellor/psychotherapist. It provides opportunities for you to critique and reflect upon the links between theory and practice in complex or challenging clinical situations, informed by contemporary theory and research. It will develop your understanding of the limitations with different modalities and techniques and your ability to integrate concepts and methods from different modalities to meet clients’ needs. The module will allow you to develop your ability to translate the application of your counselling and therapeutic skills to different contexts (e.g., face to face and online) and your critical awareness of factors that can impact the therapeutic relationships that you form with clients. A problem-based learning approach is used to develop your ability to utilise advanced and creative methods of supporting clients with complex needs and your ability to work cooperatively and productively with others to ensure best practice.

Syllabus

Topics will be drawn from: advanced models of counselling and psychotherapy; evidence-based counselling practice; integrative methods in counselling and psychotherapy; group work and communication skills in counselling contexts.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of interactive workshops and seminars, group work and problem-based learning, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. You will be encouraged to manage and take responsibility for your own learning and personal and professional development.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will:

  1. Be able to rationalise the choice of advanced counselling methods and techniques to meet specific client needs.
  2. Understand the evidence base for different approaches in counselling and psychotherapy.
  3. Be aware of limitations in different counselling modalities and your ability to effectively integrate methods and techniques from different modalities.
  4. Be able to work collaboratively with others to find creative solutions to problems.

Assessment strategy

There is one assessment in this module.

Working in groups, you will be presented with a clinical case study and asked to agree on a case formulation and therapeutic intervention. The group session must be video recorded and last 30 minutes. The group session is not assessed but must be submitted with an individual critical overview of, and evidence-based rationale for, the chosen therapeutic intervention and a critical reflection of your role in the group decision making process (2500 words excluding references)
