Module summary
This module is designed to consolidate and develop the knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout the course. Your research interests will be mapped to a suitable supervisor who will guide you through the different stages of the research process, including selection of a suitable research topic, obtaining ethical clearance, study design, analytic approach, and dissemination of the findings via a research report and a poster presentation. The research project must be informed by relevant theory and research of relevance to counselling and/or psychotherapy and agreed with your supervisor prior to commencement and should adhere to the principles of open science.

Syllabus
Topics will be drawn from: literature review; formulating research questions and hypotheses; research ethics; open science; planning a research study; data collection; data analysis; research design; disseminating research findings.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination workshops, seminars, peer support group sessions, and individual and group supervision meetings, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work will allow you to receive tutor and peer feedback. You will be expected to take responsibility for your own learning and make use of the help and support provided to address any issues or gaps in your knowledge or understanding of the module content.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- Design and conduct an empirical research project on a topic of relevance to the counselling professions.
- Understand and comply with codes of ethical practice for research and the principles of open science.
- Be able to disseminate research findings in different ways to different audiences.
- Appreciate how limitations in research design and/or methods can impact the results and conclusions that can be drawn.
